This term seems to be flying by! It has been a pleasure walking around our school this week to hear the buzz of engaged, enthusiastic children in their learning. Violet class has been overrun by pirates this week! They have been keeping the children on their toes! We have seen lots of lovely map making and treasure seeking.
This week we invited Nikki Tilson into school. She is our school improvement advisor from the local authority and we wanted to share our fantastic work in reading this year. She visited every class and looked at teaching; the children’s reading journals and she heard some children read as well. She was really pleased with the work that the teachers have put in to instil a love of reading into the children and to see how we teach children to not just read the words on a page, but to gain an in depth understanding of what they are reading through VIPERS (which is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 areas of reading).

Ask your children about VIPERs (from Year 2 upwards) to see if they can explain what it means. I would like to say a huge thank you to Miss Butcher for leading on this project and to the SMMS staff for helping our children to become even better readers.
