Our Mission Statement

Our mission is to make school a calm but exciting place to be, where children feel safe and special and where the goodness of Jesus Christ is shown by example. This is embodied in our motto, “Be the best I can be.” Children and staff are encouraged to:

Our Faith Statement

As a Church of England School, we recognise that each person is valuable, precious and unique before God. Our school is a community based on trust, honesty and love.

We aim to live in peace with each other and to forgive those who have wronged us, as taught and demonstrated in the life of Jesus.

We seek to foster in our members wonder in discovery, thankfulness for what we have, compassion for others and hope for the future.

We therefore strive to ensure that our delivery of the curriculum meets the needs of each individual and helps foster an environment where the motivation for all to achieve and reach their full potential is at the core of our commitment.

Our Christian Values

Our ten Christian Core Values form the foundation of our whole school ethos.

Our Faith Group has discussed each value in turn and identified how the values impact on the day to day life of the school in the following ways.

We value the uniqueness of each individual and encourage each other to be bold and to be able to stand up for ourselves. At St Mary Magdalene we are encouraged to be ourselves. It is important to be able to be yourself in your own way.

Trust is when we rely on others and others can rely on us. At St Mary Magdalene we work together on tasks, children with children and adults with children. “I can trust my friends when I need them.”

Honesty is when you tell the truth. It is when you speak the truth nicely and with love to each other. At St Mary Magdalene adults encourage us to be honest by demonstrating honesty themselves.

At St Mary Magdalene loving others is looking for the good in one another and encouraging each other. It is important to look after others whether in the classroom or the playground.

We are a peaceful school. This means we help people to have space to resolve difficult issues. We also give space to stop and pray too.

Forgiveness is asking God to forgive us for sinning. At St Mary Magdalene we say sorry to each other when we need to. We let each other off and are merciful to each other. We think of others and try to be the first to say sorry so things do not get worse. Each day is a fresh start.

Wonder is to ‘think out of the box’ and think further and bigger than before. Wonder is to be filled with amazement. At St Mary Magdalene we are encouraged to
think big and are encouraged to wonder in Philosophy lessons.

Thankfulness comes from the heart. It is an attitude of being grateful for everything. We show appreciation through good behaviour, not wasting things and giving thanks to God before our meals. We say thank you to our teachers and other staff. We show our teachers we want to learn by working hard on our homework and in lessons.

We show compassion to others by caring for them and helping them. At St Mary Magdalene we show compassion for people in different ways. We help each other when there is a need. We also do lots of fundraising activities to help others who are less fortunate than ourselves. This may be participating in activities for Red
Nose Day or Children In Need. Our link school in Uganda enables us to understand what school is like for children in another country and how we can help their school be better.

Hope is when you believe that something good will happen. You cannot see it yet but you are looking forward to it. Hope is when you believe in somebody. At St Mary Magdalene, adults inspire hope by telling us that they believe we can succeed.

SMSC and British Values

We take our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern multicultural Britain very seriously. We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed and lived out through the ethos and work of the school. All curriculum areas provide a vehicle for furthering understanding of these concepts and in particular, our RE, SMSC, and Philosophy lessons provide excellent opportunities to deepen and develop understanding. Children embrace concepts of Mutual Respect, Acceptance of different faiths and beliefs, Democracy, The Rule of Law and Individual Liberty, with pride and we continuously encourage them to demonstrate a good understanding of the application of these to their own lives.

Through our curriculum, we ensure children have exposure to a wide experience beyond their local community, during which these concepts are shown, through for example, church services, charity work, sporting events, a range of visits to and visitors from places of cultural and educational interests in and around London. Our Christian Core Values and ethos gives them an excellent platform for embracing difference.
